What is the first thing that ladies think about when it comes to dressing for the races?….the hat! It is the centrepiece and the determining factor between a good and a winning outfit. A lady who knows all about this is local Tuam milliner Caithriona King. Caithriona won Milliner of the Year at this year’s Irish Fashion Innovation Awards and specialises in making bespoke pieces. She has the ability to work with a client to find a style to best suit them.
I have selected two headpieces from this talented milliner, and her talent can be seen through her workmanship. The first piece I chose was the ‘Linda’ headpiece in a regal deep purple. The colour of this is the starting point and neutral tones are best suited to this piece to ensure that it makes a lasting impression. This light pink dress from River Island ensures that the focus is on your headpiece. The lightness of the pink only enhances the purple and block colours are suited to dressing for the races.
When accessorising, it’s best to once again accent your main colour. In this case, I opted for this lilac blazer and matching shoes from New Look. The pastel colours compliment the fantastic headpiece and the dress. I find that jewellery to be something a girl has to choose herself, but I would go for these silver pieces from River Island and Thomas Sabo.
The second headpiece I chose was this intricately designed navy piece. For those of you who would like to try a look for the races that is more summery and fun, I chose a yellow flower pattern dress from Topshop. The navy design in this dress picks up on the headpiece and accentuates it.
This Swarovski jewelled necklace is light and fun, and just enough, because the headpiece is always our focal point. I chose these platform heels from Schuh as the neutral white lends to summery feel that is perfect for sipping prosecco while getting swept away by the excitement of the Galway Races.
