Volunteer Galway call to Clean-Up city for the summer 2016

Press Release

Volunteer Galway is calling on people to help put Galway City’s best face on for the summer.  Volunteers are being sought to help with the Big Big Clean Up on Sunday May 22nd from 12 noon.  Clean up teams will assemble in various locations around the city to help with litter picking, weeding and painting as part of the city’s Tidy Towns campaign.  The Big Big Clean Up was officially launched on Wednesday May 11th by Mayor Frank Fahey, and Councillor Niall Mc Nelis.

Community and residents organisations, sports clubs and businesses are also being encouraged to make a difference in their own local area during National Volunteering Week, by adopting a spot for a clean-up.

‘Galway City won a bronze medal in last year’s Tidy Towns competition, and we want to do even better this year’ said Donncha Foley, Development Manager with Volunteer Galway. ‘The city is a fantastic place to live, work and play in, and we want to show the city in its best light for its inhabitants and visitors this summer.’

The Big Big Clean Up is being organised as the main event of National Volunteering Week in Galway, and is open to anyone who has an hour or more to spare on the 22nd.  ‘If you have never volunteered before, this a great opportunity to get involved, get that volunteering buzz, and make a very visible difference in the city’ said Donncha.

Since 2006, Volunteer Galway has been helping members of the public to volunteer and helping community organisations to find volunteers, by providing a constantly updated list of volunteer roles on their website www.volunteergalway.ie. The Volunteer Galway team meets with people to help them choose volunteer roles that match their interests and availability.  ‘We are always amazed by the amount of people who come to us with a desire to do something to help others, and we provide a confidential service that gets people doing something that they like and benefits others at the same time’, said Donncha.
